Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Evaluations

Harnessing the Healing Power of the Human–Animal Bond

The connection between humans and animals is more than companionship—it’s a proven way to improve emotional and physical well-being. Studies show that spending time with pets can boost oxytocin (the “love hormone”), reduce cortisol (the “stress hormone”), lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, and even act as a protective factor for older adults at risk of suicide.

An Emotional Support Animal can:

  • Provide emotional comfort and stability
  • Reduce social anxiety and shyness
  • Ease physical discomfort
  • Encourage healthy routines and self-care
  • Offer practical assistance, such as alerting you to visitors

At our practice, ESA evaluations are conducted by qualified mental health professionals trained in the therapeutic use of the human–animal bond. We work with you to thoughtfully integrate an ESA into your treatment plan, homework assignments, and therapy sessions.

Our ESA Evaluation Process

  1. Free Phone Consultation (30 minutes)
We start with a brief call to answer your questions, set expectations, and determine if an ESA evaluation is appropriate.
  2. Comprehensive ESA Assessment (90 minutes)
We review your needs using five key clinical questions to confirm whether an ESA is a safe and effective recommendation for you. This includes diagnosis, daily life impact, benefits vs. risks, and integration into treatment.
  3. Psychoeducation & Recommendations (30 minutes)
    We provide:

    • ESA vs. other assistance animals
    • Relevant laws and where ESAs are permitted
    • Care planning and integration into your daily life
    • Self-care and grounding techniques to use with your ESA
  4. Annual Reassessment
ESA letters are valid for one year. We’ll meet again to review your progress, update your treatment plan, and renew your letter if appropriate.

Assessment Time Commitment

Bariatric Surgery Psychological Evaluations

Supporting Your Journey to Long-Term Success

A psychological evaluation is an important part of the bariatric surgery process, helping ensure you are mentally and emotionally prepared for the changes that follow weight-loss surgery. This assessment identifies your strengths, potential challenges, and any barriers to long-term success—such as eating habits, coping strategies, mental health concerns, and support systems.

Our goal is to provide an evaluation that is supportive, personalized, and focused on your well-being, regardless of your background. By understanding your unique needs, we can help you prepare for surgery and set you up for a safe, sustainable, and holistic approach to health.

Our Bariatric Evaluation Process

We review your medical, psychological, and lifestyle background, as well as your motivations for surgery.
  2. Strengths & Challenges Assessment
We explore the factors that may support or hinder your surgical outcomes, including habits, coping skills, and available support systems.
